Cannabis Oil, the miracle cure for ADHD?

Is CBD oil the miracle cure for ADHD or just another fad? Is treating Challenging ADHD behaviour even possible without drugs? Is Cannabis oil safe for my child or am I making a big mistake? Is there stigma associated around CBD oil? How do I know that my child won?t get high using CBD oil? Should I stop my child?s prescribed medication in favour of CBD oil? What Possible side effects can my child have when using CBD in long and short term?

Well is CBD oil the miracle cure?……cannabis oil formally known as Cannabidiol has become all rage for parents of children all over the world with behavioural issues such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity) and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) as it is thought to be useful in treating these challenging behaviours, notice I said treating NOT curing. 

But is it Safe?

There has also been a lot of talk the around the safety of CBD oil and the use on children…..in short, yes it is safe as our bodies naturally produce Cannabinoids and Endocannabinoids. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp plants, it is also classed as food supplement and can be bought in UK health food stores.  Various studies have shown that children are able to consume CBD oil, however it is always best practice to seek medical advice before starting any new medication. 

The stigma associated around CBD oil?

Because of the ‘stigma’ associated with CBD oil, many parents may worry that their child may become hooked or dependant on the oil but as above CBD oil is classed as a food supplement.  Understandably so, as we have been told for many years that that cannabis is harmful and additive.  Parents will need to understand that it’s the oil being extracted from the plant itself and is not addictive as it is a natural product. 

Can my child get high?

“Because I got High”……NO just no there will be no getting high from CBD oil as the component, THC(tetrahydrocannabinol)is missing. CBD isn’t the same thing as medicinal marijuana.  As stated by Professor McGuire "Unless it contains significant amounts of THC, CBD won't get you high." (Source: The Standard).

CBD oil is a nutritional supplement and supposedly one of the best for suppressing some of the behavioural issues that come with ADHD and ODD by improving mental clarity.  This in turn should help your child focus more on the task in hand rather than being distracted by other things around them.  Despite this I would always seek medical advice before mixing any type of medication together or even stopping any current medication.  

What about the side effects?

As a parent I’m guessing you are probably wondering what are the possible side effects for this “miracle cure”. As with any medication there will always be side effects witch your child may or may not experience.  “Some research indicates that the use of CBD oil may trigger a number of side effects, including, Anxiety, Changes in appetite, Changes in mood, Diarrhoea, Dizziness, Drowsiness, Dry mouth, Nausea and Vomiting” (Source: Very Well health). Although the above said CBD oil is generally well tolerated and considered safe. 

So what would I do?

In conclusion, after doing a lot of my own research on CBD oil as a treatment for ADHD and ODD, there are an awful lot of conflicting stories….I do feel that there is a greater need for more professional research and clinical trials so that many more parents will feel at ease in giving CBD oil to their little darlings to help with their behaviour issues.
